PAT Testing

Monday, June 16th, 2008

PAT Testing has become a major growth area for electricians recently due to legal work and electrical requirements.Employers are putting forward existing staff like caretakers so they can perform PAT testing themselves.

Electrical shocks from electrical installations or appliances could lead to falls from heights. Badly installed or faulty equipment put staff in danger as they could cause fires and give electric shocks. Despite all of this the recommended PAT testing methods and practises aren’t needed by law they are simply methods of best practise.

All workers including employers, employees and the self employed have a legal responsibility to take reasonable steps to prevent danger from electrical equipment in accordance with the Electricity at Work Regulations. This therefore requires  the implementation of a systematic and regular program of maintenance, inspection and testing.

Training courses will teach you pat testing procedures and ways to use PAT testing equipment. Training will result in pupil who can safely identify potential dangers and test safely.  Sensitive equipmentlike some IT systems will require additional training.

A decent PAT testing training course will include details of legislation, electrical shock, fire and burn hazards, user checks, formal visual inspections, combined inspection and testing, construction of Class 1, II & III portable electrical appliances, fuse ratings, electrical plugs, testing computers, ICT / IT equipment, power tools, IEC cords & extension leads.
